Preparation of African Countries for Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) Requirements under the Paris Agreement – Showcases and Lessons Learnt

A side event was held during COP22 in Marrakesh to showcase the commitment and achievements of several African countries to develop MRV systems and build their capacities with support from the EU MRV Africa project. The side-event focused on the need develop holistic and sustainable national MRV systems across African countries. It provided useful technical information and advice on what MRV systems are and what is the good practice internationally. The event was meant to encourage other African countries to launch their domestic MRV system to be able to meet the Paris agreement requirementsKeynote addresses from several African Ministers making the case for a more robust national MRV system and its benefits were presented. Technical presentations on MRV systems and requirements under Paris agreement and country presentations giving updates on progress achieved and lessons learnt were delivered. Moreover, a Panel discussion to discuss way forward for Africa and identifying challenges faced in implementing domestic MRV systems was held. More than 50 participants attended the side event in addition to the EU representatives and the project team.
